#5 Anthony Van Dyck

Dragi prijatelji MR. RAZOR-a,

MR. RAZOR

Dear friends,

I am glad to continue our journey and would like to express my gratitude for joining us today.

Instead of a plane, we will use a time machine that will take us to the 17th century when famous Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck introduced a new beard style that became popular and is worn today after 400 hundred years. Our time engineer is ready to send us to the past. Please, put on your belts.

***

Welcome to Antwerp at the beginning of the 17th century. You probably know that nowadays, Antwerp is one of the most important European ports, and back in the 17th century, Spanish noblemen ruled the town.

Anthony van Dyck was the seventh child of a prosperous silk merchant, and he was born in Antwerp. In his hometown, he became a master painter and later moved to Italy. After leaving Italy, he became a painter at the British royal court, where he painted king Charles I portrait. King Charles wears the same beard in this painting as the painter himself.

This beard style became a favourite across Europe, and many famous individuals wear it today.

You probably wonder how van Dyck's beard looks. Please look at your right side, where a 17th-century gentlemen's group stands and talks. You can see different van Dyck beard versions, but the goatee with a moustache separated from the rest of the beard and beardless cheeks is typical for every version.

Would you like to have this beard? If you positively answered, remember that patience makes perfect. If you are in a hurry during the shave, you cannot model this beard style. You need to make a space between your moustache and the rest of your chin hair. I will show you a few tricks to succeed in this:

· Determine the shape and thickness of your moustache. Afterwards, you can begin to outline your beard with a trimmer. If you are satisfied, you can start shaving!

· I recommend shaving a minor part of the beard at one side of the face and then shaving the same region on the other side to achieve symmetry.

· Come to my barbershop if you are not sure that you will do it correctly alone 😉

Our journey today is longer than usual because we are travelling through time. We need to come back to reality. I sincerely hope you enjoyed our trip today and learnt something new.

I am looking forward to your comments and reviews.

I promise that I will prepare a surprise for our next adventure!

Your friend,

MR. RAZOR
