#4 Brada

Dragi prijatelji,

iznimno mi je zadovoljstvo najaviti kako će MR.

No, jesu li brade oduvijek bile moderne?

Do sljedećeg leta, pozdravlja Vas,

Vaš prijatelj,

MR. RAZOR

Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce that MR. RAZOR Airlines will start travelling to a new destination. If you like our new destination, I plan to visit it frequently.

You must be wondering where we are flying, the flight duration, the weather conditions at the destination and the most famous landmarks.

Please, make yourself comfortable and think about your answer if somebody asks you “Where are you travelling?”. We will take off in a few minutes.

Today’s trip plan is slightly different from what you might have gotten used to on our last flights. We will fly at lower heights than we used to as our today’s destination is BEARD.

We delved into barbering history in our previous flights, introduced franchise business models, and met hair and hair tonic. The time has arrived to tell something more about the beard. Today’s trip will have a few short points from beard’s history.

I want to start today’s journey with a sentence written by American writer Oldstone-Moore: “The history of men is written on their faces.”

I dare to state that the beard and how it is taken care of and shaved is (one of) the most important parts of men's visual identity.

However, my dear friends, history shows us that men were not always allowed to grow their beards how they wanted: the American Supreme Court decided that an employer has a right to determine beard standards employees ought to follow. Were the beards always famous?

I am sure that you heard about Alexander the Great. For those who used to skip History lessons, it is essential to say that Alexander the Great became the master of the whole world (known at that time) when he conquered Egypt and Persia.

Even though shaven faces were not considered masculine in ancient Greece, Alexander encouraged his citizens to shave. He viewed himself as a demi-god and mythical heroes such as Achilles and Heracles were portrayed shaved. Using Alexander’s shaven hairstyle was very symbolic as it was seen as possessing something heroic.

If you look through the window, you can see Pag island, meaning we are approaching our home. Before I greet you, I want to tell you something more about movements that promoted beards and finish our today's beard history lesson.

The first period started in the second century with one of the five good roman emperors, Hadrian and was about a hundred years long. In the Middle Ages, kings, knights and noblemen wore beards, but monks were prohibited from growing a beard according to canonical law. The third movement began in the renaissance as a response to medieval values and style rigidity. The last movement emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century when men stopped hiding their desires to show new masculinity.

Dear friends,

thank you very much for joining MR. RAZOR Airlines today. I hope that you will bring pleasant memories of this trip.

I am sending my warmest greetings until the next flight,

Your friend,

MR. RAZOR
